Update / Follow-up on the news : COSTA MESA : WWII Plaque Gains Admission to Campus
A controversial plaque honoring World War II veterans will be placed on the campus of Orange Coast College.
OCC President David Grant had expressed reservations about the memorial, saying the wording of the plaque might offend some people. The plaque salutes veterans who fought against “German Nazis, Italian Fascists and Japanese Imperialists.”
Grant, who was not consulted on the matter, said he would have recommended referring to the three countries as the Axis Powers.
But local veterans groups, who had pushed to have the plaque displayed at OCC because the Costa Mesa campus is on the site of a World War II military training center, argued that the terms were appropriate.
The Coast Community College District board of trustees this week approved the plaque with its original wording.
The trustees have not set a date for the unveiling of the plaque.
