A panel of judges selected winning paintings of Mission San Juan Capistrano Saturday and doled out $10,000 in prize money in a first-of-its-kind contest that drew more than 80 artists from the region.

The selection ceremony marked the end of an outdoor painting festival that called attention to the magical qualities of the mission’s ever-changing light. All last week, artists sat nestled in the 219-year-old mission’s quadrangle, depicting the historic landmark on canvas.

The grand prize of $5,000 went to Lynn Gertenbach of Calabasas; Dan Pinkham of Palos Verdes Estates took second place and $3,000, and Joseph Stoddard of Pasadena won $2,000 for third place, said Pam Ludwig, director of Joan Irvine Smith Fine Arts Inc., which sponsored the event with the California Art Club of Pasadena.
