Clinton Birthday Party No Surprise
President Clinton celebrated his 49th birthday Saturday with golf and a “surprise” birthday party reported nationwide before it happened.
The President’s party was at the 135-acre estate of World Bank President James Wolfensohn.
“He was as surprised as anyone can be after having the surprise reported in the national and local press,” said White House spokeswoman Ginny Terzano, who relayed details of the private party to waiting reporters.
Among the 60 guests were former Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen and Sen. Alan K. Simpson (R-Wyo.). They all sat around six tables and feasted on grilled chicken, steak, trout and potatoes.
Four dozen balloons were on order, together with 26 arrangements of wildflowers for the guest tables and other strategic spots.
Then there was the cake, a large, round, carrot cake that its maker, Patty-Cake Patisserie in Wilson, Wyo., said would feed 60. The round surface shows Clinton teeing off against a background of the Teton Mountains, all of it detailed in multicolored frosting.
