Apsley House Reopens in London
Apsley House, the last great London townhouse with its collections intact and family still in residence, has reopened to visitors after a three-year restoration project.
The house was built between 1771 and 1778 for the Earl of Bathurst and was purchased by the Duke of Wellington shortly after his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. It is on Piccadilly at Hyde Park Corner.
After enlarging the house, the Duke filled it with his 2,500-item collection of paintings, silver, porcelain, sculpture and furniture. It was given to the nation in 1947 by the seventh Duke of Wellington; the eighth duke retains private apartments in Apsley House.
The house is open daily, except Mondays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
