Japan’s Apology

Re “Japan’s Apology: Late and Too Little,” editorial, Aug. 16:
In the 50 years since Japan surrendered to the Allies, that nation has legally banned warfare, institutionalized pacifism, taught its children that peacemakers truly inherit the earth, and firmly set itself upon a course of complete economic, political and social reconstruction.
Certainly, Japan must continue to examine the full implications of its wartime aggression. But you--and much of the world--fail to recognize that such soul-searching has already borne a generation of Japanese to whom war is anathema.
Apologies are just words. True spiritual progress is difficult. And if every nation was expected to endlessly supplicate itself before all enemies past and present, the world would never get off its knees.
