Ventura County Weekend

FRIDAY * Bill Coffey, he of Mudheads and Matt & Bill fame, will perform about 9 p.m. Friday at Two West Coffee Company, located on the corner of Ventura Avenue and Main Street, Ventura. After recently relocating to the 805-area code from Idaho, Coffey continues work on a CD, which is expected to be released within a few months. As of late he has been assisted by the capable bassist Jason Bays. As always you can expect to hear passionately performed music with a little twang that encompasses folk and rock. And, Mudheads fans, Coffey is still performing a few of those oldies as well. Information: 643-6411.

SATURDAY

* With just four days remaining, there’s still plenty of fun to be had at the Ventura County Fair. Besides all of those exhibits, the carnival and greasy food, the weekend finale will include the ever-popular rodeo and the following musical acts: Oak Ridge Boys (tonight), Classic Rock All Stars (Friday), Iron Butterfly (Saturday), Smokin’ Armadillos (Sunday). The fairgrounds are at Seaside Park, 10 W. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. Hours: daily from 11 a.m. to midnight, exhibits close at 10 p.m. Admission: $6, $3 senior citizens and children. * The Olivas Adobe, 4200 Olivas Park, Ventura, will host the Saturday night “Music Under the Stars” summer concert series; this week: guitar troupe La Rondialla will perform folk songs of Mexico; concerts begin at 7 p.m.; $7, $5 senior citizens and children; 658-4728.

WEEKEND

* Santa Susana Repertory Company’s first-rate presentation of the musical drama “Quilters” will conclude this weekend at the Civic Arts Plaza Forum Theatre, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. This is Molly Newman and Barbara Damashak’s tale of a clan of sisters, set in the 19th-Century American frontier, who use the practical craft of quilting to record their history. Directed by John Slade, the production is replete with music and fine singing performances. Show times: 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. UP THE COAST

* Blues great Buddy Guy will headline the House of Blues Festival on Saturday at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The fund-raising event, which is the blues club’s first off-site production, will include performances by Little Feat, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and legendary blues-jazz vocalist Jimmy Witherspoon. Actor Jim Belushi will host the proceedings, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Bowl’s refurbishment and the House of Blues Foundation. Tickets: $30, $26 and $20. Information: 568-BOWL.

* More Santa Barbara Bowl action: Ringo Starr and his third All Starr Band World Tour. This nostalgia-laden tour will roll in to Santa Barbara on Sunday for a 6 p.m. gig. Ringo’s buddies include Randy Bachman (Guess Who and B.T.O.), Felix Cavaliere (Young Rascals), John Entwhistle (The Who), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), Mark Rivera (Billy Joel’s band), keyboardist Billy Preston and drummer Zak Starkey. * In what is billed as a “family affair,” the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will present the “Great Garden Nature Night” on Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. After munching on some light foods, botanists Sally Isaacson and Chris Walden will guide participants--the Garden hopes to attract entire families--on a search for nocturnal animals, like owls, bats and opossums. During the nature walk, Native American legends will be discussed and astronomer Richard Reed will point out planets and constellations.
