South Bay : CHARITABLE BOOST

Share

It appears some good can come from tragedy after all.

A Wilmington-based gang prevention agency recently received a check for $36,500 that had been part of fines assessed against a recycling company charged with negligence in the death of a worker last year.

“This is terrific,” said Eleanor Montano, president of Mothers and Men Against Gangs. “This is a big boost because we hardly had any money at all before.”

The money was given as part of City Atty. Jim Hahn’s charitable donation program, which imposes additional fines in cases involving environmental, workplace and slumlord crimes and distributes the money to nonprofit service agencies.

Deputy City Atty. Maria Perez-Manning said Montano’s organization was selected because of its efforts to steer young girls away from gangs and drugs.
