Countywide : Beach Exhibit Lands at John Wayne Airport

Share

Visitors to John Wayne Airport have an opportunity to view classic surfboards and unusual bathing suits as part of a beach exhibit that has moved there from Brea’s city gallery.

Members of the airport commission had planned to organize their own exhibit of beach-related items for display in the concourse but instead made arrangements to use Brea’s, officials said.

The exhibit, which ran from June 12 through July 28 in Brea, examines California’s beach culture from an anthropological viewpoint.

The show covers the development of surfing, skateboarding, swimming, roller skating, even kite flying and sandcastle building.

Most of the items from the Brea show were moved to the airport, but because of space the 50 surfboards that were part of the original display had to be limited to 10, said Lisa Gee, Brea’s gallery assistant.

At John Wayne, informational signs give overviews of the history and growth of the various sports. Movie posters for surf films and classic record album covers are also featured.

The exhibit, which opened this week at the airport, will run through Oct. 29 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
