The San Jose Rhinos kept the Bullfrogs off balance for most of the game Thursday and beat them, 11-4, in the first game of a two-game Roller Hockey International Western Conference playoff series in front of 2,744 at the San Jose Arena.

Rhino goalie Jon Gustafson was a key force behind San Jose’s victory, stopping 34 shots on goal.

In addition, a strong San Jose defense pestered the normally high-scoring Bullfrogs, giving up only one goal per quarter.

Though the Bullfrogs appeared they would dominate early on after Victor Gervais scored 30 seconds into the game, things quickly changed. The Rhinos came back hard, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 4-1 first-quarter lead.

Mark Woolf led the Rhinos with two goals and five assists.

Gervais, Rick Judson, Daniel Shank and Darren Banks scored for the Bullfrogs.

The Rhinos scored two more goals in the second quarter and scored five in the fourth quarter.

The Bullfrogs (19-4-1) will play the Rhinos (13-11) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at The Pond in Game 2. If the Bullfrogs win, a mini-game will determine who will play the Eastern Conference champion in the RHI finals.
