The Kansas City Royals purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Dave Fleming from triple-A Omaha and scheduled him to start against the Yankees in New York tonight.
The Royals also recalled pitcher Jim Converse from Omaha and optioned pitcher Melvin Bunch to the same club.

Mark Johnson, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first baseman most of the season, broke his left thumb at triple-A Calgary and will be sidelined the rest of the season.
Johnson, who had never played above double-A until this season, was injured sliding into second base.
