GARDEN GROVE : City to Get 15 Cheaper, Preferred Police Cars

The city will save $1,000 each on 15 new police cruisers and get the preferred model because the state of California backed out on a 100-car deal.

Police officials in several cities have lamented Chevrolet’s decision to stop producing Caprice police cruisers. Garden Grove has had 23 Caprices on back order since Feb. 21 and was poised to buy 15 Ford Crown Victoria models instead at $19,291 each.

But the state canceled a 100-car Caprice order earlier this month, Garden Grove Police Chief Stanley L. Knee said, making them available to other buyers. By purchasing some of those cars, he said, the city will get the model it wants for $18,300 each.

The city also will begin shifting from white patrol cars to black-and-white cruisers, making the cars more distinctive.

The City Council approved the purchase from Wondries Chevrolet in Alhambra for $275,000.
