OAK VIEW : Repair Work Begins on California 150

Construction work began Friday to repair an 800-foot section of California 150 between Oak View and Carpinteria that was heavily damaged by fierce winter storms.

Caltrans officials awarded a $2.4-million contract to C.A. Rasmussen of Simi Valley, which will stabilize the hillside, grade and fill the stream, construct a retaining wall and build an embankment so storms will not erode the slope.

“I’m really glad we’re getting ready to finish this project,” said Dave Servais, the chief maintenance manager for the California Department of Transportation. “I’ve been pushing for this for a long time.”

The 800-foot section is along the lower portion of California 150, the winding highway that has been closed since the January floods. The project is the fourth and final repair job along the highway.

The closure has forced hundreds of commuters from Ojai and Santa Barbara to drive down California 33 to the Ventura Freeway to make their way north and south.

Officials estimate that the repair job will take about three months, and said the highway should open by mid-December.
