HOT AND HEAVY: That’s the weather and the traffic forecast heading into summer’s last three-day holiday weekend (B1). . . . Officer Brian DeMattia of the California Highway Patrol warned that drivers need to be extra-careful on the roads over the three days. “Have a lot of patience, give yourself plenty of time, be courteous, follow all the rules of the road, don’t drink and drive,” DeMattia said. “And have a good weekend.”

HAPPY ENDING: Aemalemalo Tuimoloau--Junior Tui to his friends and Coach Tui to his players--is back at full strength in his role as defensive coordinator at Channel Islands High School (C12). . . . A year ago, Coach Tui, 40, spent weeks in the hospital, first for open-heart surgery and then to deal with an infection that hit after the operation. “Junior went through a frightening time, and it is joyful to see him back coaching,” says head football coach Joel Gershon. “He is a person it feels good to be around. Junior is a feel-good guy.”

BIG WINNER: Body-surfer David Ford of Ojai racked up his second national championship in three years last month in Oceanside, and the 19-year-old Ventura College student won a trip for two to Australia for his efforts. . . . David, who got a free trip to Hawaii when he won the national tourney in 1993, thinks he’ll take twin brother Chris--who came in second--on this trip. David’s secret to winning? “I kicked hard and looked stronger than anyone else in the small waves.”

ALL FIRED UP: Relatives of Rocketdyne workers Debbie Peterson and Joe Koncel were disappointed Friday when the test firing of a rocket engine was postponed. . . . Not for work reasons--the couple had hoped the blast would cap off their wedding vows, held at the Santa Susana test site. (B1) The Simi Valley residents picked the spot for their vows because they met there three years ago when they were both assigned to the night shift. . . . “It was a field lab romance,” says Peterson.
