The Mighty Ducks and goaltender Guy Hebert agreed to terms Friday on a multiyear contract filled with performance-based bonuses.

Specifics were not announced, but it’s believed the incentive-laden, three-year deal could push Hebert’s salary to about $1 million per year. Hebert earned $535,500 last season and was seeking a contract that would pay him close to $1.2 million, the average salary for NHL starting goalies.

He had a 12-20-4 record with a 3.13 goals-against average in 39 games for the Ducks during the lockout-shortened 1995 season. In two seasons, he is 32-47-7 with a 2.95 goals-against average.

“We feel he’s a big part of our success and that’s why we signed him to a long-term deal,” said Pierre Gauthier, Duck assistant general manager. “There’s also something to be said for the fact that he’s one of our most popular, most recognizable players. He was an unknown, so to speak, when we drafted him, but he’s come through. He’s gained a lot of confidence and everybody here [in the Duck organization] has gained a lot of confidence in him.”

Hebert was flying to Orange County from his summer home in Upstate New York and was unavailable for comment.

Last month, the Ducks signed backup goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov to a long-term contract.

“We’re happy with our goaltending,” Gauthier said. “I think when you’re a West Coast team, when you travel like we do, you need both goalies. And we’re comfortable with both.”

However, the Ducks have yet to make a significant move to bolster their lukewarm offense or dreadful power play. In addition, they lost skillful center Stephan Lebeau in the off-season. Lebeau, the Ducks’ third-leading scorer with 24 points, signed to play in Switzerland.

Training camp opens Sept. 10.
