REAL NIXON? Leave it to Oliver Stone to turn a killer from the “Onion Field” movie into H.R. Haldeman in the December release “Nixon.” But James Woods as Nixon’s White House chief of staff isn’t the producer’s only mischievous twist. . . . Vanity Fair this month says Stone’s screenplay shows “nasty Nixonia on virtually every page.” One of the subplots bound to chill admirers of Richard Nixon, who is buried near his birthplace in Yorba Linda: The movie ties Nixon in with an anti-Castro group that Stone also ties to the JFK assassination.

NO STOPPING SHORT: To give you an idea how tough it is to break Lou Gehrig’s 2,130 consecutive baseball games, guess what is the longest California Angels consecutive game streak: Sandy Alomar’s 648 games, from 1969 to 1973--not even one-third of the way to Gehrig. . . . Baltimore Orioles’ shortstop Cal Ripken is due to break Gehrig’s record Wednesday at home against the Angels. Three of those Angels--Rex Hudler, Rene Gonzales and coach Rick Burleson--have played second base for the Orioles alongside Ripken.

WARM-UP TIME: With Dana Carvey’s TV and movie deals, you’d think his stand-up comedy days would be long behind him. But he’s at the Galaxy Concert Theatre in Santa Ana tonight for two shows, 7 & 9:30. . . . Reason: Carvey loves club work--he was at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in July--and he’s also trying out new material for an upcoming HBO cable TV special. . . . Galaxy tickets are still available at $28.50.

Now about halfway through her two-year stint in the long-isolated nation, Cox, 27, says the experience has given her a new sense of patriotism. . . . “It’s so amazing to be someplace where you’re walking down the street and you see people with your flag on their backs,” Cox says. “They all want to get to America. Everything is ‘America.’ ”
