30 Arrested for Drunk Driving
During a holiday weekend crackdown on drunk driving, California Highway Patrol officers arrested 30 motorists in Ventura County, more than three times the arrests made during the 1994 Labor Day weekend.
From Friday morning until midnight Monday, the highway patrol had a maximum-enforcement period, hoping to cut down on traffic fatalities during what is traditionally the deadliest holiday of the year for motorists.
As of Monday evening, one traffic fatality was reported in Ventura during the holiday weekend. A Santa Paula cyclist was killed Saturday when he was struck by a car at Main and 12th streets in Santa Paula. Police said the driver of the car that hit Esteban Fernandez, 20, had not been drinking.
Ventura County lifeguards were busy over the holiday weekend keeping an eye on the droves of beach-goers, but reported no rescues or problems.
