A 17-year-old Lancaster youth was in critical condition Tuesday night after being accidentally shot while posing for a photo at a home in Fillmore.

The victim, who spent several hours in surgery, was hit by a gunshot blast in the upper leg about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday while standing inside a friend’s home in the 600 block of 4th Street, a Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Deputies believe that he was posing with friends and cousins for a photograph. One of his cousins, Vincent Parrish, 19, was holding a shotgun, which he believed was not loaded.

At some point, Parrish got out of the picture to watch while more photographs were taken. As the rest of the group posed, Parrish leveled the gun and pulled the trigger, firing a single round into his cousin’s leg and groin area, the spokesman said.

His wounded cousin was taken to the Santa Paula Memorial Hospital emergency room and underwent several hours of surgery, a hospital spokeswoman said.
