CAMARILLO : Ideal Height of Pole Signs to Be Studied

Share

Camarillo officials will conduct a study to determine the best height for freeway signs that advertise large retail centers.

The Planning Commission voted Tuesday night to initiate the study, which will look at increasing the allowable height of poles that hold advertising signs to 35 feet for retail centers containing 225,000 feet or more. The actual dimensions of the signs’ face would not be affected.

The city currently specifies that signs of retailers near the highway can be no taller than 25 feet. The color, design and placement of each sign must be approved by the Planning and Community Development Department.

The department intends to draft an amendment to the city’s sign ordinance, which would require it to conduct an environmental review and hold public hearings. The City Council would make the final decision on the ordinance amendment.

The proposed amendment would affect the Camarillo Outlet Center and the planned Camarillo Town Center, both large retail centers adjacent to the Ventura Freeway.
