PORT HUENEME : Permit, Funds Sought to Rebuild Pier Wing

Towering waves turned Port Hueneme’s T-shaped pier into an L-shaped structure during January’s storms.

Now the city must deal with a towering load of paperwork to make the pier whole again.

Officials notified the City Council on Wednesday that they have applied for a permit to rebuild the destroyed east wing of the pier. The California Coastal Commission is expected to approve the reconstruction of the 100-foot portion by Sept. 15.

Pounding surf swept away 39 pilings, four benches, two light standards and the pier’s east end on Jan. 4.

Tina Esparza, housing and facilities maintenance director, said earlier that the pier reopened on Feb. 10 after the city spent about $180,000 on repairs. Esparza said it would cost an additional $250,000 to replace seven damaged piles and to rebuild the east end.

“We’re trying to recoup some of that,” Esparza said.

According to Esparza, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will pay for most of the repairs, with the state footing a portion of the bill. Esparza said the city has begun a lengthy process of supplying FEMA with paperwork for reimbursement for the repairs.
