OUTLOOK
Change was inevitable this season at Southern California Christian. But the Flames’ administration wasn’t prepared for the ensuing upheaval. Lyn Lumley was hired to replace Bert Esposito, who did a solid job and left the position with a 27-18 record. However, Lumley wasn’t around long enough to learn the players’ names. Shortly after accepting the job, he received a better offer from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore. His superiors at SCC understood that the job was too good to turn down, so Lumley left to work with offensive linemen in the Pacific Northwest. Enter Darin Owens, who was the junior varsity coach and assistant head coach at Arrowhead Christian Academy last season. Owens signed a contract Monday and then attended his first practice. This is commonly known as a late start. “We’re only in our third day of practice,” Owens said. “We’ve got a long way to go. Obviously, it’s going to be a big challenge. Hopefully, we’ll all be on the same page by the middle of the season.” Smith is being counted on to make big contributions and provide leadership. Caballero and Enda might provide Schinhofen with quality targets.
