AT THE CLUBS : Country Tunes, Food and Television--All in One Stop

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Country Star Hollywood, a country music theme restaurant at CityWalk, may be among the first venues to fulfill the American tradition of eating and watching television at the same time.

It’s uncanny, really. Anywhere you position yourself in the 14,000-square-foot club--restrooms included--you can watch a plethora of TV screens airing music videos by popular country artists, most notably Reba McEntire, Vince Gill and Wynonna Judd (all of whom are investors in Country Star).

The combination of the club’s garish design and the not-so-subtle marketing approach border on shamelessness. Sure, you can enjoy some of country music’s history by viewing glass-encased suits designed by the legendary North Hollywood tailor Nudie, which have been donated by performers ranging from Marty Stuart to McEntire. In front of Country Star, young line-dancers move in pairs to recorded country music, and on Tuesdays guests can sample their own vocals to a country-stocked karaoke machine. Die-hard fans might be drawn to the numerous kiosks throughout the venue, where they can call up information (or even more videos) on their favorite country artists.

Other folks, however, might be inclined to save a nickel by popping a TV dinner into the microwave and turning on the Nashville Network.

Club Buzz: Century Club, the new moniker for Tripp’s in Century City, is planning a grand opening party at the end of the month. In the meantime, the revamped room, which now includes a large live-music stage, is open Mondays for China Club (last seen at Tatou), and Fridays and Saturdays, when the three-tier venue offers dancing to a mix of hip-hop, disco, techno and funk.
