Waves in USC Pool Play

Pepperdine will play Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rivals UC Santa Barbara and UCLA on Saturday in the Southern California water polo tournament at USC. The Waves meet Santa Barbara at 8:50 a.m. and UCLA at 1:30 p.m.

Pepperdine played two scrimmages each against UCLA and Santa Barbara last week in Malibu, with the Waves winning three of the four matches, according to Coach Terry Schroeder. UCLA, which split with Pepperdine, was missing some of its top players, Schroeder said.

Pepperdine and UCLA met three times last season, with all the matches decided by one goal, including two in overtime. The Bruins won twice.

The tournament continues Sunday, with matchups determined by Saturday’s results.

Pepperdine returns four of its top six goal-scorers from last year’s 17-9 team. Junior two-meter man Alan Herrmann led the Waves in 1994 with 62 goals.

Other top players for the Waves include senior driver Larry Felix, junior goalie Vatche Shirikjian (Glendale High) and senior driver Mike Radka (Royal), who was a redshirt last season.
