Pacific, which hadn’t beaten a Pacific 10 team since 1983, upset Oregon State, 23-10, Saturday night at Stockton.

The Tigers had lost 16 in a row to Pac-10 teams, but Joe Abdullah ran for 142 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tigers (1-1).

The Beavers (1-1), plagued by mistakes, never got their option running attack going and had five turnovers. Oregon State fumbled six times, losing four.

Pacific’s Ray Stukes intercepted a Tim Alexander pass and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown with 3:09 remaining.

Washington State 38, Montana 21--Mike Price’s team won the game at Pullman, Wash., but the coach was anything but pleased after watching his Cougars give up 113 yards on 14 penalties.

“We’re going to make great strides to improve that. But that is just ridiculous,” Price fumed.

Montana, a Division 1-AA team, had an apparent touchdown nullified by a pass interference penalty and a subsequent 38-yard field goal attempt failed. The Grizzlies were flagged 11 times for 97 yards.

Derek Sparks scored twice and Frank Madu rushed for 114 yards for the Cougars (1-1), who held Montana (1-1) to minus-six yards rushing.

Arizona State 45, Texas El Paso 20--Jake Plummer threw a career-high four touchdown passes, three coming in a lopsided first half, and Chris Hopkins rushed for a 131 yards as the Sun Devils opened their home schedule with an easy nonconference victory over the Miners (0-2).
