Southeast : Federal Grant Adds 20 Police Officers

Twenty new police officers will hit the streets of Long Beach next year, thanks to a $1.5-million federal grant.
The Justice Department grant is targeted specifically for hiring officers to augment community policing efforts. City officials hope to enlarge the Police Department’s Community Constable program, which calls for assigning individual officers to troubled neighborhoods where they can serve as long-term problem-solvers and community liaisons.
