COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Tailback Walters Starting From Scratch
- Share via
Shawn Walters, the junior tailback dropped to the second unit in USC’s opening game last week, said he was stunned when Coach John Robinson told him last Friday that senior Leonard Green would start ahead of him.
“I asked him: ‘OK, how can I get it back?’ ” Walters said.
“He told me he wants to play all three of us a lot in the early games, meaning me, Leonard and Delon [Washington], to see what we can all do.
“I figure I’ve got to go to work on everything, to start from scratch.”

Of his continuing quarterback competition between Brad Otton and Kyle Wachholtz, Robinson prefers to look at it as a position, not a competition.
“When you add up their stats [in the 45-7 opening victory over San Jose State], it comes to 22 for 35 and 257 yards,” Robinson said. “If one guy did that, you’d be saying: ‘Hey, SC’s got a great quarterback.’ But because it’s two guys, it confuses us.”
Robinson threw No. 3 quarterback Matt Koffler’s two completions in four passes for 13 yards into the aggregate.
