SIMI VALLEY : Thrill Rides Put New Spin on Carnival
After days of preparation, Simi Valley Days opened its carnival Wednesday with a handful of new rides designed to churn the stomachs of even the most steely nerved thrill seekers.
New rides include a Gravitron, which spins its victims inside a contraption designed to look like a UFO; the Quasar, which tilts and twirls its riders at the same time, and the Himalaya, a ride organizers described as an “up, down and around” thrill.
“They are just like the rides at Magic Mountain,” said Shari Schultz, the chairwoman of the Simi Valley Days organizing committee. “Bigger and more spectacular than ever before.”
New rides specifically designed for younger children include a mini-roller coaster featuring cars shaped like flying dinosaurs, a 20-foot slide and a house of mirrors.
The carnival, complete with clowns, games and merchandisers hawking everything from home security systems to back scratchers, will run until Sunday when the two-week civic festival ends.
Other upcoming events include a rodeo featuring professional and local amateur riders and a parade down Los Angeles Avenue starring seven local bands and the 1st Division Marine Corps Band from Camp Pendleton.
