San Gabriel Valley : WATER HAZARDS?
A water district planning to build reservoirs at two San Marino sites has agreed to do an environmental study to settle a city lawsuit that questions the project’s safety.
As part of the settlement, the San Gabriel Water District agreed to the city’s request for seismic studies of one part of the plan, which would place two 6-million-gallon tanks on a plain above the high school and near the Raymond Fault, officials said.
Mayor Bernie LeSage said the water district has also agreed to landscape both sites, compensate the high school and reduce the noise from a water pump at the other planned reservoir on Longden Road.
The water district’s board signed off on the deal Tuesday, and the San Marino City Council was expected to formally agree Wednesday night.
A similar suit by San Marino residents also is expected to be settled, said Wayne Lemieux, attorney for the water district, which serves San Gabriel, Rosemead and Temple City.
Water district officials agreed to the $10-million project in February, saying an environmental report was not needed. But construction was delayed three months later when San Marino sued.
The suit came after residents complained that they had not been informed about the tanks.
