Hillhaven Nursing Home Strike Possible: The Service Employees International Union has told Hillhaven Corp. that its members may strike or picket 25 nursing homes in California beginning today. The union represents about 2,000 employees at the Hillhaven nursing homes, four of which are in Southern California, where collective bargaining agreements have expired. The nursing homes contain about 2,500 licensed beds, the union said. A Hillhaven spokesman said the Tacoma, Wash.-based company has hired replacement workers so that there will be no disruption of patient care. Hillhaven operates 40 nursing homes in California, including ones in Orange, Santa Paula, Riverside and Claremont.
