Counterfeit Audis Reported: About 10,000 fake Audis have been built in China with smuggled parts, the China Business Times reported. The state-run No. 1 Automobile Co. in Changchun, northeastern Jilin province, has produced about 60,000 genuine Audis since 1989. Other factories, run by “criminal elements,” have produced 10,000 fake Audis since the second half of 1993, the newspaper said. The counterfeits have been advertised widely and sold in China at low prices, the report said, adding that buyers have received fake quality certificates purported to come from No. 1 Automobile Co. The report warned that some of the spare parts, produced by rural township enterprises, are unsafe.
