SANTA ANA — A 20-year-old Santa Ana man was shot and killed early Sunday in a possible robbery attempt by gang members, police said.
Police officers found Juan Carlos Cervantes dead from multiple gunshot wounds about 3:30 a.m. in the front yard of a residence in the 5300 block of West Roosevelt Avenue, Santa Ana Police Sgt. William Hill said.
Hill said Cervantes and a friend were walking home when they were confronted by gang members, who might have attempted to rob them.
One of the suspects brandished a handgun and shot Cervantes.
Cervantes’ friend, who was not identified, fled and was not injured.
There is no indication that Cervantes or his friend were involved in gang activity, Hill said.
No suspects were in custody Sunday, and the Santa Ana Police Department gang unit was continuing to investigate.
