Intel Names Successor to Pentium: The computer chip, once code-named P6, will be called the Pentium Pro processor, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel Corp. said. It will be introduced later this year. The Pentium, introduced in 1993, has become common in personal computers, succeeding the 486 chip. The new processor is intended for workstations, powerful desktop machines linked to a network. The Pentium Pro has 5.5 million transistors, whereas the Pentium has 3.1 million. It will more easily handle complex programs such as multimedia and video conferencing.
