Share

To make its disaster headquarters disaster-proof, the city of Moorpark wants to acquire a federal grant for seismic reinforcement of a City Hall room it plans to use as an emergency operations center.

The so-called Citrus Room at City Hall is already equipped with extra phone lines and cables for communications equipment. There are also plans to build an emergency generator for the room, which would be used by emergency personnel in case of disaster.

“We already have the drop lines for the phones and outlets for electronic communications,” said Mayor Paul Lawrason. “This would just help us maintain the facility.”

The City Council will consider applying for a $70,000 grant during its meeting tonight The money would be used to bring the room up to a much more stringent building code used for essential emergency facilities.

New joints and bracing would be used to stabilize the shear walls of the Citrus Room, and other structural improvements would be made to ensure that the room remains standing during a big quake.
