Starting cornerback Brian Kelly sprained an ankle in Saturday’s 45-10 victory over Houston and Coach John Robinson said if Kelly can’t play at Arizona on Saturday, freshman Daylon McCutcheon will get his first USC start.

“We won’t know until later in the week if Kelly can play,” Robinson said Tuesday. “It looks like a low ankle sprain, which should heal fairly quickly.”

Robinson also said tailback Shawn Walters might have helped himself in the stiff competition for the tailback spot with his game-high 76 yards in eight carries against Houston.

“We’ll give Shawn more focus this week because he deserves it,” Robinson said.

Walters, considered a cinch starter after leading USC in rushing the last two seasons, instead was the No. 2 tailback against San Jose State and No. 3 against Houston. He has been playing behind Leonard Green and Delon Washington.

At quarterback, Robinson said Brad Otton will start at Arizona, Kyle Wachholtz will start the second quarter and that it will be decided at halftime if there will be a second-half rotation.

Otton, who has never thrown an interception at USC, is ranked first in the Pac-10 and second in the nation in passing efficiency at 191.5. He has completed 28 of 41 (68.3%) for 405 yards and five touchdowns.
