New England quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who suffered a separated shoulder in Sunday’s loss to the 49ers, is not able to raise his left arm above his shoulder.

This is a bye week for the Patriots, but Bledsoe could miss the team’s next game Oct. 1 against Atlanta.

Bledsoe is the only starting quarterback in the NFL without a touchdown pass.

Don Shula was back in a golf cart and Dan Marino watched practice from the sideline. The coach and quarterback are on the mend but expect to be sound for the Dolphins’ next game Oct. 1 at Cincinnati. Miami has a bye this week.

Shula, 65, underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday for torn cartilage in his right knee, a jogging injury that dates back to August of 1994.

Marino, who bruised his chest during Monday night’s 23-10 victory over Pittsburgh, plans to rejoin workouts next week.

Cornerback Rod Woodson, who injured his right knee on Sept. 3, said he hopes to return this season and has talked Coach Bill Cowher into keeping him on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ active roster.

Cowher told Woodson he would wait at least three weeks, until the injury can be further analyzed, before the Steelers make a final decision.

If the Steelers put Woodson on injured reserve, he cannot not be reactivated this season.

Receiver Johnny Mitchell and safety Gary Jones, both starters, will miss the New York Jets’ game at Atlanta on Sunday and could be out longer. Mitchell already has missed the last two games because of a strained back muscle, and Jones missed last Sunday’s victory over Jacksonville because of torn cartilage in his left knee.

The Buffalo Bills plan to file federal lawsuits against dozens of bars and restaurants in western New York and Canada for broadcasting the Bills’ game against the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday in violation of the NFL’s “blackout rule.”
