WORLD IN BRIEF : CROATIA : Tudjman Calls Early Elections in October

President Franjo Tudjman called early parliamentary elections in a clear effort to capitalize on recent battlefield victories over rebel Serbs. Elections for the Croatian Assembly’s lower House of Representatives will be held Oct. 29 instead of in August. Tudjman’s ruling Croatian Democratic Union is expected to win an overwhelming victory after last month’s military advances, in which the army seized most of the territory in western Croatia held by rebel Serbs since a 1991 war.
