‘London Kills Me’

Hanif Kureishi’s 1992 directorial debut seems less resounding and more scattershot than his earlier scripts for filmmaker Stephen Frears: “My Beautiful Laundrette” and “Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.” But this film does suggest how street life can suddenly erupt into a carnival. At its simplest level, the film is about how Clint (Justin Chadwick, pictured, with Emer McCourt as Sylvie), a 20-year-old street hustler who takes his name from Mr. Eastwood, attempts to straighten out his life by getting a job at a trendy restaurant. But he needs a good pair of shoes to land it, and his mission to find them becomes a pretext for a series of picaresque escapades with his street-gang chums (Bravo Friday at 8 p.m.).
