San Gabriel Valley : NO JACK?
Jack might be in the Box, but he’s having problems getting into South Pasadena.
Local restaurateur Peter Yost, supported by army of preservationists, has appealed to the City Council a proposal to allow a drive-through Jack in the Box restaurant at Fair Oaks Avenue and State Street.
In a city with only one drive-through eatery, the Planning Commission approval last month of the Jack in the Box has ignited passions.
“We don’t want our downtown turning into a fast-food strip,” said resident Mary Ann Parada. “They wouldn’t allow a drive-through in Old Pasadena because they want quality establishments. And we want the same.”
Foodmaker Inc., Jack’s parent company, is promising to build a unique “Craftsman-style” restaurant that would blend with the area.
The appeal by Yost, owner of Shakers and Wild Tyme, will be heard Nov. 1. Said City Manager Kenneth Farfsing: “We expect a juicy debate.”
