ALGIERS — A former Interior minister was shot and killed Thursday in an attack by unidentified gunmen in the capital, security forces said.
Aboubakr Belkaid, 50, was shot as he crossed a city square downtown near the Casbah just after midday Thursday. As Algeria’s Interior minister in the late 1980s, he was the head of the country’s security forces and police, who have been the most frequent targets of attacks by Islamic militants.
