Williams Formally Withdraws $10-Million Claim Against City

Share

Los Angeles Police Chief Willie L. Williams on Friday officially withdrew his $10-million claim against the city for defamation and invasion of privacy.

The claim focused on leaks of confidential personnel records detailing a Police Commission investigation into whether Williams accepted free accommodations in Las Vegas and then lied about it to the commission. Williams announced Wednesday that he would drop the claim, after several City Council members called on the chief to withdraw it or resign, and others told him that a majority of the council wanted to reject the claim.

Williams’ attorney, Melanie Lomax, said the claim was withdrawn after assurances that the council will launch “a vigorous investigation” into the leaks.
