The San Diego Padres called a news conference for this morning, apparently to announce that center fielder Steve Finley has agreed to a new contract.

The Padres also may announce that third baseman Ken Caminiti signed a new contract. Caminiti said more than two weeks ago that he had agreed to a two-year, $6-million contract but hadn’t signed it yet.

Outgoing General Manager Randy Smith and Larry Lucchino, the club’s president and chief executive officer, have spent the last few days wrapping up loose ends, including player contracts and the details of Smith’s departure.

On Tuesday, six-time NL batting champion Tony Gwynn underwent MRI exams on both knees and had an X-ray on his broken right big toe.

Dr. Jan Fronek said the toe is still irritating to Gwynn. He said any decisions on surgeries will be made next week. Fronek said the MRI on Gwynn’s right knee was to check for “wear and tear.”
