The headline says, “Wilson Drops Out of White House Race” (Sept. 30).

Too bad. California is better off with him traipsing around the country than settled in Sacramento, wreaking havoc on the state.

After being bombarded with media fantasy statements like he’s hot, he’s tough, he’s young, he’s the governor of California, he’s a shoo-in and he’s it, the only realistic statement that can now be made about Wilson’s presidential campaign is, he’s out! Now maybe he will do what he promised us in his reelection campaign. Finish his term as governor.

What a relief for President Clinton. He must be dancing up and down Pennsylvania Avenue. The man he feared most--if we can believe that man--has withdrawn from the presidential race. Short on money and support, not to mention respect, Wilson has decided he’ll settle for the job Californians elected him to do.

Is Wilson going to fade away? I hope so! Wilson assures us that he is not going to fade away. Why doesn’t he get the message the universe is trying to tell him?

The fact that he was not able to raise the necessary funds is the universe trying to tell him that the voting public doesn’t see him as a legitimate candidate for the presidency of the United States. (But, then, I couldn’t believe he could see himself worthy of being governor of California.)

I do not understand Wilson. He quits his race for President because of a little million-dollar debt. Yet California is billions of dollars in the hole, and he insists on remaining governor!
