VENTURA : College Police Begin Campus Bike Patrols

Share

Ventura College has begun campus police bicycle patrols, the first school in the Ventura County Community College District to do so.

Bicycle patrols will help the officers stay in shape and allow police to better sneak up on suspects or crimes in progress, Lt. Robert Escobedo, the campus police supervisor, said in a press release.

“Our officers will be better able to patrol areas on campus that are difficult to reach by car, especially when traffic is heavy,” Escobedo added.

Bicycle patrols are also much cheaper than cars, he said.

The campus officers will be using black 21-speed bikes with special “rock-hopping” shock-suspension forks, front and rear lights, and “Ventura County Community College Police” stenciled on the frame.

They recently received training from the Oxnard Police Department’s cycling instructor, who taught the officers how to jump curbs, ride down steep hills and stairs and tackle suspects.
