MAKING HISTORY: The Black Student Union at Cal State Northridge is organizing a local version of the “Million Man March” set for Monday . . . the same day as the main event in Washington, D.C. “This is going to be a historic day for black people in America,” said group President Fabian Speights. “But a lot of people can’t go.” Instead, they’ll gather on campus. African American students from other schools are invited.

WATER WARS: Forget whether you liked the movie, “Waterworld,” says the head of the Universal Studios Hollywood Tours. . . . “WaterWorld,” the new stunt show-adventure at the theme park, is an extravaganza of a different order (F1). . . . And, no, big spender Kevin Costner was not in charge of the $15-million budget, which is pocket change compared to the reported $200 million spent on the film.

TREASURE TROVE: A photo collection depicting life in Natchez, Miss., from 1870 forward is on display at Cal State Northridge and two other local venues. They are the life’s work of photographer Henry C. Norman. . . . His collection of glass negatives was purchased 35 years ago by physician Thomas Gandy. See the Weekend pages, starting in Calendar on F1A, for other local listings, columns and features.

DUMP THE DUMP: Santa Clarita’s City Council has, once again, put its money where its mouth is. . . . The council has awarded a $321,000 public relations contract to Bill Hussey & Associates to keep fighting a proposal to put a landfill in Elsmere Canyon. . . . That adds up to $371,000 for the Los Angeles firm this year alone.
