Share

A man suffered serious burns early Friday after he fell asleep while smoking in a motel room, officials said.

Jack Louis Farrar, 40, suffered second-degree burns to his back and buttocks, fire officials said. Farrar was in serious condition at the UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

“It was definitely a very, very serious situation,” Battalion Chief Ken Soltis said.

Fire and police personnel responded to an emergency call just before 1 a.m. at the Costa Mesa Village Motel, in the 2400 block of Newport Boulevard, where flames had gutted most of Room 114. With 18 firefighters and the building’s sprinkler system, the fire was controlled in about 15 minutes, Soltis said.
