One More Year of Lasorda, One Year Too Much

Share

So Tommy Lasorda has been signed to manage the Dodgers for another year. Hopefully, it will be the last year of underachieving, bumbling play.

As if winning the mediocre NL West were a major achievement. Remember that if not for realignment, the Dodgers would have been out of the race in July and mathematically eliminated around Labor Day.

While it is true that some teams change managers too often, sticking with a manager year after underachieving year (1988 being the only season he got the most out of his talent), is just as foolish.

With all due respect to Tom Lasorda for his loyalty to the Dodger organization, it is time to rid the dugout of his fatuous presence. Considering all the talent the farm system has delivered to L.A., the team is pathetically shy in fundamental baseball execution. They should have won the division by 10 games this year.

Walter O’Malley must be twisting in his grave as Dodger Blue Tommy and his accomplice, the wispy P.R. maven Fred Claire, squander the abilities of their athletes.

No sense expecting Peter O’Malley to dismiss one or both of these miscreants. I believe he became an ascetic and lives in a mountaintop in Tibet.

In the matter of Tommy Lasorda being rehired for yet another year, there is one word that describes Peter O’Malley:

Gutless.

To Mike Downey [“Safe or Out?” Oct. 8]: Did the Dodgers not qualify for postseason play by winning the division title? Why would you want to fire a manager who, year in and year out, has continued to win championships for the Dodgers?

Thank you, Peter O’Malley! As a Giants’ fan, I look forward to another season of Tommy’s dugout snoozes.

The Dodgers are the only team that can honestly say they did more talking this year than Johnnie Cochran.

Peter McNeeley lasts only 89 seconds before throwing in the towel against Mike Tyson. Six weeks into the season, the University of Miami football team has yet to beat a Division I-A opponent. Hideo Nomo staggers through the pennant drive and loses in the playoffs. And Tommy Lasorda takes some well deserved heat for his underachieving team.

Not a good season for Hurricanes, Tornadoes and other windbags.
