Ex-LAPD Officer Koon to Be Sent to Halfway House

Stacey C. Koon, one of two Los Angeles police officers convicted in the 1991 videotaped beating of Rodney G. King, is expected to be released to a federal halfway house Monday, according to his lawyer.

Koon, who has been serving his sentence in a federal prison in Oregon, will be transferred to the halfway facility in Rubidoux in Riverside County, said lawyer Ira Salzman.

Salzman noted that Koon’s expected release from prison comes three weeks after Laurence M. Powell, the other officer convicted in the beating, was sent from prison camp to a halfway house in Orange County. Both were sentenced to 30-month terms, and Powell was released from prison Sept. 26 after serving 24 months.

“We don’t understand the difference in treatment,” Salzman said.

Under their sentences, Koon and Powell are to be held in custody until mid-December, but the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to consider next year an appellate court order that, if upheld, could result in resentencing and longer prison terms.
