The FBI appealed for help Saturday in locating a possible witness to the deadly derailment of an Amtrak passenger train in a remote desert area.

A passenger and an Amtrak employee reported seeing someone about 300 feet away as they climbed from the wreckage before dawn. The person then walked south away from the derailment, FBI agent David Tubbs said.

“They don’t know if the person was a male or female. It was dark out,” Tubbs said.

The person was wearing a cowboy hat, he said.

The derailment of the Sunset Limited killed one person and injured 70.

The agency is following more than 1,000 leads throughout the country, and it boosted the number of agents on the case in Arizona from 90 to 150.
