Gould Rolls Into Final by the Numbers

Michelle Gould’s march through the Women’s Professional Racquetball Assn. field continued unabated Saturday.

Gould, seeded first in the tournament at Racquetball World in Canoga Park, advanced to today’s 1 p.m. final against unseeded Jackie Gibson by defeating fourth-seeded Chris Evon of San Diego, 11-6, 11-9, 10-11, 11-2.

Earlier in the day, Gould defeated Michelle Wiragh of Laurel, Md., 11-3, 11-0, 11-0.

Gibson, of San Diego, worked her way into the championship match by beating three seeded players (Nos. 6, 3 and 2) without losing a game. She swept Cheryl Gudinas of Lisle, Ill., in the semifinals, 11-7, 11-3, 11-6.

Tennis

Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico defeated Alex Reichel of Fullerton, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, in the singles semifinals of the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s Men’s Pro Satellite Masters tournament at L.A. Fitness Warner Center.

Scott Humphries of Alamo, Calif., defeated Chris Pressley of Miami, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2), in the other semifinal. Hernandez and Humphries will meet in the final today at 11 a.m.

Auto Racing

Sean Monroe held off hard-charging Ron Hornaday Jr. to win the Spears Manufacturing 300 at Mesa Marin Speedway in Bakersfield.

After bumping Lance Hooper and passing on the inside with 23 laps to go, Monroe had firm control of the race until a late caution flag. Hornaday took advantage of the break and caught Monroe, who was slowed by lapped traffic, but the Palmdale driver wasn’t able to pass.

Monroe posted the first victory of his career in a NASCAR Southwest Tour race.
