County’s Plea for New Trial in Brutality Suit Is Rejected

Share

A judge refused Tuesday to order a new trial in a brutality lawsuit against the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in which a Samoan American family was awarded $15.9 million.

Attorney Paul Paquette, representing the county, sought the new trial because six plaintiffs allegedly claimed they lied about events surrounding a Cerritos bridal shower raided by deputies in 1989.

But Superior Court Judge Robert Devich, who presided over the six-month trial, said sworn affidavits from the six plaintiffs should have been filed with the court and the new trial motion should have been filed earlier.

Paquette said he would appeal.
