Restaurants, hospitals, schools and other establishments toss out tons of food every day that could be used to feed the hungry, Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said Tuesday.

Glickman said the department would bring together civic groups, restaurant operators and others sometime before Thanksgiving to explore ways of getting that food to poor people. He discussed the plan during a World Food Day speech and later with reporters.
